Historical origin and original meaning
The laurel wreath (Latin: corona laurea or laurea) originated in Ancient Greece, associated with the god Apollo and the Pythian Games (athletic, musical, and poetic competitions held in Delphi). It was awarded to victors as a symbol of victory and glory. In Ancient Rome, it was widely adopted and popularized: it was bestowed upon victorious generals during military triumphs (official parades), upon distinguished poets (the origin of the term "poet laureate"), and later as an imperial attribute. It represented military triumph, excellence, and immortal honor. Expressions such as "to be crowned with laurels" or "to rest on one's laurels" derive from it.
